==Basics==
===Getting a Fish to Bite===
In the tutorial, they recommended to try to be random. Do not simply hold the reel button since it will pull it too far away from the fish. Short random taps of the reel button (R2) works for most fish. Some fish like to chase and will follow if you hold R2 down.
===Catching a Fish once It Bit===
A fish will do three things, turn direction and splash around and jump. When it turns direction quickly turn to the direction it is facing with the on screen prompt. Try not to reel when it is splashing around. You can try tapping the reel button if you want.
When it jumps out of a water it’s a quick time event, follow the on screen prompt. Usually after the QTE, it will sometimes turn direction then a rest period where you can reel. As the fish gets closer to you it is more likely to turn, there is an auto-turn boundary. When it is far, it will move farther left and right. Closer, it will have a smaller range. Just try not to reel when it is turning or splashing. I noticed though tapping the reel button gets the rod to turn faster, experiment with that.
==Tips and Tricks==
*Don't look at the strength of your line. Don't look at the progress meter at the top. Once you have hooked a fish you are committed so there is no point in looking at those meters.
*Your eyes need to be on the fish the entire time to anticipate its movement. Don't take your eyes off the fish. Changes happen quickly and you need catch them in time. The most important thing to ensure you catch a big fish is making sure the tension indicator does not go red. That generally happens when you are pulling one way and the fish is moving the other way. Don't depend on the indicator to tell you to pull left or right, if possible. Sometimes, by the time it tells you to pull left or right it is too late.
*If a fish is distant you can use its wake to determine movement until it is close enough to see the fish in the water. Once you see a consistent movement in one direction then start to reel it in.
*Be patient though. Some of the biggest fish I caught took well over 5 minutes to bring down. I can get in 2-3 seconds of reeling between 10-15 seconds or more of waiting until the fish is calm again.
*The controller vibration is your friend. When it starts vibrating, it means the fish is using it's 'stamina' to resist, so don't reel. When the vibration stops, it means the fish has used up all of it's 'stamina' and you have a good 1-3 seconds FREE to reel. Stop reeling after that. (I personally reel for about 2 secs then stop and wait for the fish to struggle (use it's stamina) again and repeat.
*After the animation where the fish jumps out of the water, that's also an indicator that the fish has used up it's stamina. You also have 1-3 seconds where you can reel in after that.
*1. Reel after controller stops vibrating. (you have 1-3 seconds of free reeling time) 2. Reel after fish jumps out of the water. (you have 1-3 seconds of free reeling time) 3. DO NOT reel anytime outside of steps 1 or 2.
*If you think/see that the fish might turn, do not angle your control stick all the way to the right/left. Angle it diagonally up so that if the fish changes directions, you have a faster time to change the direction of your rod too.
*If you have slow reflexes, when you're trying to reel in the higher level fishes and they keep turning like crazy, you can pause the game and reposition the left stick so you can minimize the amount of damage being done to your line.
*Once you've hooked a fish, there are only three things you need to do to land pretty much any fish in the game:
*#Follow the fish's swimming direction (observe the camera movement if you can't see the fish).
*#Avoid reeling (R2) when line tension is in the red.
*#Avoid reeling when your controller is vibrating. Alternatively, listen for a splashing sound/visual, and avoid reeling when the fish is splashing/struggling.
